ASOLAN informs schools about how sustainability is implemented in the island’s hotels

Via its Sustainable Accommodation Group (GAS),  Lanzarote’s Association of Hotel and Apartment Owners (ASOLAN), has informed the heads of Primary and Secondary Schools in Lanzarote about its initiatives aimed at the youngest members of the island’s population, namely its pupils and students, to promote responsible and sustainable tourism.

ASOLAN presented its action plan to raise awareness of Sustainable Accommodation during the meetings with representatives from primary and secondary schools held on 19th and 20th February at the Lanzarote Island Council (Cabildo). Also present at the meetings were the Minister of Education, Artistic Heritage and Waste Management, Ms. Carmen Rosa Márquez, and the Island’s Director of Education, Mr. Mario Pérez.

Activities proposed by the Association include educational visits designed for students to learn about the hotels’ environmental management, the different types of renewable energy systems and equipment, as well as the good practices that have been implemented by the Sustainable Accommodation Group (GAS) with regard to waste management as well as water and energy savings.

In addition, for the twelfth year running, the Association presented its 12th Annual Drawing Contest, which coincides with World Environment Day. This year’s theme, which marks 100 years since his birth, is dedicated to the artist César Manrique (1919 – 2019). It is hoped that in this way, young people on the island will be encouraged to take an interest in and be inspired by his work and cultural legacy.

All Primary schools on the island are invited to participate in the competition as well as students with special educational needs (SEN).
