World Environment Day

World Environment Day

“Seven billion dreams. One Planet. Consume with Care” is the motto used by the UN to celebrate this global event on the 5th of June.
Is it possible that so many people live together on a planet like Earth without exhausting their resources and putting in danger the development of future generations? Yes, it is possible. There are reason to be optimistic, but we have to change our way of life, otherwise we will be jeopardizing the survival of the flora and fauna of the planet and therefore our own.

With the aim of raising public awareness World Environment Day is celebrated every 5th of June since 1973. This time it will focus on the sustainability of environmental resources with the slogan “Seven billion dreams. One Planet. Consume with Care”, focused on the problems caused by excessive consumption in a world with a population in continuous and unbalanced growth.
The organization that gave birth and holds this international event is the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN), which also created the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), designed to manage all activities related to environment and sustainable development.

So how can we participate in this global day? To involve the entire planet, the UN has thrown down the gauntlet to the world’s citizens. Taking care of the environment should not be left solely in hands of governments and large companies. All of us, with small actions, can meditate about the problems we cause on the natural environment and propose solutions to small-scale actions, which is the key to big solutions.

The international organization asks us for a small gesture, an intention or an action is intended to mitigate the ravages caused by human activity on environment. Celebrities like actor Leonardo DiCaprio, soccer player Yaya Touré or musician Jack Johnson already joined this initiative that hopes to reach every corner of the planet.

To participate in this so-called Dream Team, the UN has launched the website World Environment Day Challenge, where you can see which celebrities have joined the cause and contribute with your own views and tips on sustainable consumption.

Will you celebrate World Environment Day this Friday?
